Jimmy Kimmel is hosting The Oscars this year for the second year in a row! Why? Well maybe it's because of last year's mishap with the winner of Best Picture.
The last category of the night turned to chaos when Faye Dunaway accidentally declared La La Land the best picture over Moonlight at the Academy Awards, the crew backstage was the first to realize that this was a huge mistake. Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the accounting firm that tallies the Oscar votes, issued an apology stating: “We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and the Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture,” the announcement said. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
We can definitely count on some jokes about the mishap to happen this Sunday night. Kimmel even went on The Ellen Show, February 27th, to discuss his reappearance as host. He says: "We had that whole incident with the envelope at the end of last year, which was not my fault by the way, just can't say that enough. Some people think it was a prank that I was pulling. Not a prank I was pulling, If it was a prank I was pulling it would have been on Matt Damon...," he continues, "But they asked me the day after the Oscars happened, and I think maybe they felt sorry for me because I got caught up in the whole envelope thing. And I said 'yea that would be great' and the next thing I know here we are!"
We just can't believe they asked him literally right after last years awards. The academy definitely wants justice for Kimmel and we could not agree more! We do wonder though if he would have accepted the offer if the Academy had asked a few months ago. As previously reported, Jimmy Kimmel's son Billy was born with a serious heart issue.
"It's a terrifying thing," Kimmel said. "You know, my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what's going on and I'm standing in the middle of a lot of worried looking people -- kind of like right now -- who were trying to figure out what the problem is." Kimmel explained to his audience on May 1, 2017 that a sonogram of Billy's heart revealed the baby had been born with a heart condition in which a pulmonary valve was completely blocked and there was a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart.
Thankfully his son is doing ok now but it is still a huge undertaking him and his family had to go through over the past 9 months.
The Oscars are airing this Sunday, March 4th at 8 EST on ABC!
